What is Asian Handicap?
Asian Handicap is way of evening up a match by giving the weaker team a handicap. This alters the odds of both teams winning to roughly the same value and the odds should start of at around 2.0.
Like normal odds, the Asian odds fluctuate, almost like a seesaw, depending on what happens. If a game opens at 1.95-2.0 and a plot of bets are placed on the home team to win, the odds may alter to 1.90 - 2.05. As one sides odds go up, the other sides' odds go down. Sometimes if there is heavy betting on one side, the handicap is changed.
The handicap is given in form of goals, or part of goals. If the difference in ability between the teams is sizable, the handicap given to the weaker team is bigger. The handicap can be up to 3 goals or even more if the actual outcome of the match is expected to be very one-sided.
There are only two possible outcomes in Asian Handicap betting, home team win, or away team win. There is no draw bet like we traditionally are used to in Europe (1x2). If there is a draw in Asian Handicap betting, the stake is returned and this is called a no bet. But that doesn't mean if the actual game ends in a draw, that means there is no win because the handicap comes into effect.
Example: If you bet on Roma to win at the handicap -1 and the game ends with a 1-0 Roma victory, then it is a no bet and the stake is returned.
The handicap for the favorite team will be a minus (-) handicap. The outsider will have a plus (+) handicap. If both teams are of equal strength there will be a draw no bet, (dnb), (0) handicap. This means that if the game ends in a draw, the stake is returned.
In Running or live betting
There is a big difference between betting live on Asian Handicap and traditional live betting. In Asian Handicap placing a bet only counts from the moment you make the bet. The scores made in the game before your bet, do not count! So it is very important to remember, only the goals scored after your bet will count.
Why bet on Asian Handicap
First of all the margins the Asian Handicap bookmakers and poker sites offer are much lower than the European bookmakers offer on the traditional 1x2 betting. The Asian Handicap bookmakers pay out around 94-98% of what they take. The European bookmakers pay out around 90% on the traditional 1x2 betting, so there is a great value to be found in betting with an Asian Handicap.
These days most of the European bookmakers also offer Asian Handicap but watch out. The margins vary a lot between different bookmakers, the odds at an even game can vary from 1.85 -1.85 to 1.96 - 1.96, so there can be a big difference to look out for!
Another advantage is that you can bet on a big outsider to get a good result, but the outsider doesn't have to win. If you bet on Cardiff to win away against Man U with a handicap of +1.5 and Man U wins 1-0, you win your bet. With traditional 1x2 betting it would have been difficult to get a win out of that result.
The same thing goes with big favorites, if you feel that Man U will crush Cardiff and you get 1.15 at a traditional bookmaker that is not a very exciting offer. But if you bet with Asian Handicap maybe you can get -1.5 at odds 2.05 and if they win big and you are right, you will have a decent return for your money.
It might seem difficult to understand what Asian handicap is about and what the different handicaps mean. However if you give it a try and really try to understand it, it should become simpler to understand and you have a chance of better returns now and in the future. This is because Asian Handicapping is the future in sports betting, and you will find it exciting, fun and profitable.
